KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin women's cross country team took second at the MIAA Championships on Saturday, posting a team score of 57 points.
Saturday's 6K race was held at the Eastern Hills Golf Club with Kalamazoo College serving as host.
Ranked 22nd nationally, Calvin finished 25 points behind 14th-ranked Hope which placed five runners in the top 10.
Senior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) made a bid for first place individually, running in second for nearly the entire race but dropped two spots in the final 50 meters to finish fourth with a time of 22:30.7.
Junior Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's second finisher, placing ninth in a time of 23:20.1 on the 6K course. Senior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was 11th (23:25.1) and senior Maria Kuiper (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) 16th (23:32.6).
Freshman Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin's fifth runner, placing 17th in a time of 23:33.2. Junior Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was 18th (23:36.1) and senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS) 20th (23:44.1) to round out Calvin's top seven.
"We were hoping to give Hope a little bit of a scare but we came up short," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Hats off to Hope. They came up with a great team race and I congratulate them on the championship. For us, Breanna Kooiman was outstanding today. She has been a bit under the weather the past few weeks but she ran a tremendous race today. She showed great determination and grit. Now it's time to regroup and refocus. We have a little bit of work to do if we want to advance out of regionals to the national meet."
At the conclusion of Saturday's race, Diekema was named to the All-MIAA first team while Koetje, Kooiman and Kuiper were named to the All-MIAA second team.
Calvin will now prepare to compete at the Great Lakes Regional meet on November 10 in Franklin, Indiana.
