GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin treated nearly 500 fans inside Van Noord Arena to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-14 victory over Kalamazoo in the home opener for the Knights.
Ranked second nationally, Calvin improves to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA with the victory.
After leading just 9-7 in the opening set, Calvin reeled off an 8-1 run to take control of the set and eventually the match.
Calvin hit a blistering .373 in the win led by senior Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) who tallied 14 kills, 13 assists and seven digs along with a hitting percentage of .545.
Sophomore Kelsey Smith (Vienna, Va./Madison HS) blasted nine kills and hit .692 to go with a pair of service aces and a pair of digs.
Freshman Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Il./Timothy Christian HS) had eight kills and hit .636. Sophomore Madelyn Hall (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had five kills and hit .714. Sophomore Grace Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) had 10 digs and four kills. Freshman Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) had nine digs, three service aces and a pair of assists. Junior McKenna Covey (Costa Mesa, Ca./Estancia HS) had three block assists. Sophomore Anna Schriemer (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) picked up a match-high 20 assists to with eight digs.
COACHES COMMENT: "I want to thank the many fans who came out to support our team including the Calvin students," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "It means a lot to the players and our program to have that kind of support and we felt the energy from our home crowd. It was good to have a chance to play at home. There's no better place to play than Van Noord Arena and tonight was a fun night."
