GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin rolled to a 9-0 win over Alma Saturday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts to improve to 8-6 overall and to 1-1 in the MIAA.
Junior Jose Larrea (Carracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose') and sophomore Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) opened things up with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles with junior Kyrus Tsai (Glenview, Il./Glenbrook South HS) and freshman Konner Shapiro (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South HS) following with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and freshman Brandon Johnson (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Larrea dropped Brandon Ralston 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles followed by Wolters defeating Brett Reuter 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Stallings was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles while junior Owen Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
Junior Cobe Benzel took out Brendan Murdie 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles while senior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wisc./Wauwatosa East HS) defeated Tait Morrissey 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
"It was a good conference win at home," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "Our guys came out with a lot of energy and did the job. We're back at it next week wtih some tough matches ahead."
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to rival Hope for a 4 p.m. match.
