HANOVER PARK, Il. - The Calvin women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 6-3 non-conference decision at Wheaton College Friday night at the Centre Court Athletic Club.
Calvin stormed out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play and played the host Thunder close throughout singles play before dropping five of the six singles points and the match.
In doubles action, sophomores Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Maria Poortenga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) then won a thrilling 8-7 win at No. 2 doubles.
Newhof claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Emma Westwick at No. 1 singles to put the Knights up 3-1 but Wheaton took the final five points. Wheaton won three of the remaining five singles flights with the aid of tiebreakers. Sarah Magnuson edged Calvin's Brouwer 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 2 singles. Claire Browning edged Calvin's Poortenga 7-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Bethany Hoogerheide topped Calvin's Brittany Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6 singles.
Calvin returns to action next Saturday when it takes on the College of Wooster in a morning match followed by an afternoon contest against Capital University.
