GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team rolled to a 195-89 dual meet victory over Wheaton College Satuday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
Ranked 17th in the College Swim Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin took first place in 12 events in the meet.
Junior Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) was a double-winner, taking first place in the 200 freestyle (1:58.82) and 200 backstroke (2:12.40). Chao led a one-two Calvin finish in the 200 backstroke as senior Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) took second (2:12.52). Wellman led a one-two Calvin finish in the 200 IM, winning the race in a time of 2:19.45 while sophomore teammate Grace Anne Delcompare (Naples, Fla./Home School) was second (2:19.88). Wellman was a double-winner as she also took home a win in the 100 backstroke (1:00.37) while freshman Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va./Home School) was second (1:04.25).
Senior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer HS) was a double-winner, taking first place in the 50 freestyle (24.94) and 100 butterfly (1:00.36) with sophomore Anna Weber (North Royalton, Oh./North Royalton HS) taking a close second (1:00.59).
Calvin took the top two spots in the 100 freestyle with sophomore Emilia Shokohi (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) taking first (55.52) and sophomore Kiersten Hollis (Oak Hill, Va./Home School) second (56.00).
Another one-two finish came in the 100 breaststroke with sophomore Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) winning in a time of 1:11.43 while sophomore Kylie Shaw (Dixon, Il./Dixon HS) was second (1:11.52).
In the diving competition, Calvin ate up more points. Junior Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) took first on the one-meter board (239.02) while freshman Marie Wanek (Chelmsford, Va./Home School) was second (175.28). Wanek won the three-meter competition with a score of 181.35.
In the 200 medley relay, Chao, Sonday, sophomore Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Gunderson took first place in a time of 1:51.67. Calvin's 400 freestyle relay of Chao, Edewaard, Shokoohi and Gunderson closed out the meet with a winning time of 3:40.35.
COACHES COMMENT: "This was a solid win over a friendly non-conference rival," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "This is always a special meet on the calendar. We took on a full 16-event lineup for the first time this year and felt we performed very well. We are showing more depth than last year which will help us later this season."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host a quadrangular next Friday and Saturday when Carthage, Albion and Ohio Northern come to the Venema Aquatic Center.
