Calvin opened its 2019-20 season with a triangular against Division II Grand Valley State University and Division II Hillsdale.
Ranked 17th nationally, Calvin was defeated by Grand Valley (13th in Division II) 168-71 and by Hillsdale 118.5-112.5.
Junior Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had the big swim for the Knights, taking first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.06. That time currently ranks seventh nationally.
In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Kylie Shaw (Dixon, Il./Dixon HS) was third with a time of 1:10.67. In the 100 backstroke, junior Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) was third (1:0025).
Calvin also had a strong showing in the relays. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay of Chao, freshman Hannah Brown (Palmyra, Va.), senior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer HS) and sophomore Kiersten Hollis (Oak Hill, Va./Home School) took second in 1:40.05. The time currently ranks fourth nationally.
Calvin's 200 medley relay of Chao, sophomore Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), sophomore Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Gunderson took second in a time of 1:49.56. That time currently ranks third nationally.
Calvin will host the MIAA Relays next Friday inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
