CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Calvin sophomore Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) punched her ticket to the upcoming NCAA III Championships Saturday afternoon at the NCAA III Central Region Diving Championships. In addition, sophomore Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) concluded a strong two-day set at the regional meet.
Smith took 11th one the three-meter board on Saturday at the regional meet with a score of 392.20. Combined with her fifth place finish on the one-meter board Friday, Smith gains one of the nine qualifying spots for the upcoming NCAA III Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. Smith was making her second straight appearance at the regional meet. She will be traveling to the national meet along with her swimming teammates for the first time.
Magnussen was making her first appearance at the regional meet this weekend. After placing 13th on the one-meter board on Friday, Magnussen came back with a 12th place score of 391.60 on the three-meter board Saturday. She was competing at the regional meet for the first time.
"I thought Joselyn and Hannabeth both competed extremely well today and throughout the weekend," said Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan. I am very proud of both individuals. Joselyn made regionals last year and now has taken another step forward this year in qualifying for nationals. Hannabeth made a big step forward in qualifying for regionals and she competed very well this weekend. The thing that stood out to me the most about Joselyn and Hannabeth today is that they both closed strong. The competition this weekend was very demanding. Our conference (MIAA) very well and that was good to see as well."
Smith and Magnussen were two of 28 divers competing at the NCAA III Central Region Diving Championships. Wabash College served as the host institution.
