HOLLAND, Mich. - The 16th-ranked Calvin women's swimming and diving team put together an impressive set of performances at the MIAA Relays Friday night at the Holland Aquatic Center. The annual unscored event featured several tradition relays as well as a new sprint knockout competition.
In the relay competition, Calvin took first place in four events.
In the 1500 yard relay, Calvin's trio of seniors Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS), Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan HS) and Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) took first place in a time of 16:14.96, finishing 12 seconds ahead of the team from Hope. In the 400 IM relay, Calvin's group of sophomore Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS), freshman Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS), sophomore Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Grace Anne Delcompare (Naples, Fl./Home School) and junior Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) cruised to a first place time of 4:14.64.
Calvin's 500 yard progressive freestyle relay took first place in a time of 4:45.32, edging Albion's second place relay that clocked a time of 4:45.46. Calvin's relay consisted of junior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) senior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Smith and Serino. Calvin also posted a third place time of 4:54.86 as freshmen Anna Weber (North Royalton, Oh./North Royalton HS), Emilia Shokoohi (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) and Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Murphy made up the team.
Calvin also won the 200 yard mixed medley relay which featured two members of the women's team and two from the men's team. Calvin's group of senior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), sophomore Sam Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), Jenna Oezer and Gunderson won in a time of 1:40.29.
In addition, Calvin's mixed 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Noah Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS), senior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason HS), Alyssa Oezer and Chao took second in a time of 1:32.81.
The sprint knockout rounds featured 50-yard sprint events with eight swimmers to an event. Each sprint even began with quarterfinal rounds paired down to semifinal rounds and then to a championship final of two.
In the 50 yard butterfly, sophomore Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Edewaard both reached the semifinals. Edewaard then won the championship heat with a time of 27.69.
In the 50 yard backstroke, Chao reached the semifinals before finishing with the third-best time of the competition in 27.71. In the 50 breaststroke, Sonday reached the semifinals with a time of 32.17.
Later in the 50 freestyle, Alyssa Oezer, Weber and Serino reached the semifinals with Serino then advancing to the championship heat. Serino took second with her best time of the rounds coming in 24.90.
"It was a great night and a very fun format with the knock out 50's at the end," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "Our team swam WITH each other which was the word of the week. We were able to highlight some of the best swimmers from all of the teams and I think everyone came out of her feeling good about the way this meet came together."
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts a D3 quad meet with Ohio Northern, Albion and Carthage.
