GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team will travel to Olivet College Wednesday to take on the Comets at 4 p.m. to close out the regular season.
The Teams: The Comets are 8-7-2 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA. The Knights are 8-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAA.
The Coaches:Doug Carter is in his first season for the Comets. Carter came to Olivet after a successful coaching career at Northwood University in Midland. He was the head coach for the men's program from 2001-17, while also leading the women's team from 1998-2010. Carter played collegiate soccer for the University of Surrey in England. He started all three seasons and was team captain for two of those campaigns. He also played 11 seasons for the Civil Service Football Club in London. In 1992, Carter graduated from the University of Surrey with a bachelor's of science degree in psychology and sports studies.
Emily Ottenhoff is in her first season for the Knights. A Calvin Alum, Ottenhoff graduated in 2010 and was a standout two-sport athlete, spending four years with the Calvin women's soccer program and four years with the Calvin women's basketball program. She earned All-American status in 2009 for soccer. Prior to her five-year stint coaching at Stevens, Ottenhoff was a two-year graduate assistant at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology while completing a master's of science degree in physical education and coaching science at Indiana State University. She has had a successful season so far as she has led the Knights to a 6-3-2 record.
The Players: The Comets are led in scoring by senior Emma Essen who has 11 goals, two assists and 24 points.
The Knights are led in scoring by seniors Emily Van Vliet and Mackenna Nesky. Van Vliet has a team-leading eights goals to go with one assist for a total of 17 points. Nesky has six goals and 12 points. Sophomore Amy Kliewer has been Calvin's backstop in goal, posting 56 saves along with a goals-against-average of 0.70 and six shutouts.
Series History: The Knights lead 49-5-0 over the Comets in series history.
