GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin Women's Soccer team kicked off conference play tonight as it defeated Kalamazoo College 1-0.
Sporting their new white uniforms, the Knights posted an early goal in the seventh minute as sophomore Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich. / Plymouth Christian) found senior Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich. / Calvin Christian) on a breakaway and she scorched a line drive over the keeper's head from just outside the 18-yard box.
Calvin struck again in the 28th minute as sophomore Maria VanderLei (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) led the rush up the field and found Van Vliet on the go and she lashed a shot from near the 18-yard box for her second goal of the game. This was Van Vliet's seventh goal of the season.
The Knights outshot the Hornets 21-7. Calvin goal keeper Sophomore Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) had two saves in goal.
Head Coach Emily Ottenhoff touched on the new single round robin schedule this year. "Being at home we have to protect home field, we talked a little bit about that, we talked about getting off to a great start and just taking it game by game. Whatever the result in the past was doesn't affect today and what happens today doesn't affect the next one. It's good to get a win, we will take it and be ready for Adrian because they are going to be tough for us."
The Knights are now 6-2-1 on the season and 1-0-0 overall in the MIAA.
Calvin will host Adrian College Tuesday, October 2ndat 7 p.m. as it looks to improve its conference record.
