Calvin Women's Soccer Slices Through Raindrops to Beat Brits
ALBION, Mich. - Calvin clinched a spot in the upcoming four-team MIAA Tournament with a 1-0 victory at Albion Tuesday evening.
With two match-days left on the league schedule, Calvin sits in fourth place in the MIAA standings, one point ahead of fifth place Adrian. Kalamazoo is in third place in the MIAA standings but is ineligible for MIAA Tournament play, placing emphasis on spots one-through-five in the current MIAA Tournament race.
Senior Camie Rietberg (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) scored the only goal of Tuesday night's match as she redirected a free kick taken by freshman Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Chrisitan HS) into the far right corner of the net in the 61st minute of play.
The play began with an Albion foul just outside the 18-yard box. Koops then swung her free kick into the goalmouth with Rietberg getting a head on the service and placing the ball into the net for her seventh goal of the season including her fourth game-winning tally of the year.
Calvin threatened in the first half as as shot by Koops hit the Albion post in the 18th minute while another shot hit the crossbar.
Rietberg's goal came on Calvin's first shot attempt of the second half and slipped into the net amid a driving rain storm.

"Under very challenging condidtions our team was very intentional with its play, showing high energy and motivation," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "We came close to scoring in the first half and didn't lose our focus in the second half. We showed great heart and determination to pick up a huge road win for our team."

Calvin (12-6-0 overall) finished the game with an 11-4 shots at goal advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) picked up three saves to post her seventh shutout victory of the season.
The Knights travel to Adrian Friday night for a key 7 p.m. conference match at Docking Stadium.
