OLIVET, Mich. - Calvin clinched a berth in the upcoming MIAA Tournament with a 74-57 victory at Olivet Wednesday night.
With a conference bye at hand on Saturday, Calvin finishes its regular season league campaign with a 7-9 record. The Knights are in sixth place in the MIAA Tournament, a half-game behind 7-8 Saint Mary's which plays host to Albion on Saturday. Calvin will finish as either the fifth or the sixth seed for the six-team MIAA Tournament that begins next Tuesday.
Calvin (12-13 overall) roared out of the gates against Olivet on Wednesday, leading 13-4 at the end of one quarter and 39-9 at halftime after the Knights outscored the Comets (8-16 overall, 4-11 MIAA) 26-5 in the second quarter.
Calvin connected on 53 percent of its field goal attempts in the second quarter with freshmen Mady Vander Zwaag (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Stephanie Coors (Evergreen, Co./Valor Christian HS) scoring six points apiece in the second stanza.
The Knights led 60-29 after the third quarter and then emptied its bench throughout the fourth quarter as 16 Calvin players received playing time when the final horn sounded.
"We had a great couple of practices leading up to this game," said Calvin interim head coach Austin Randel. "Our focus and intensity levels were high all week. I thought our defensive communication tonight was excellent."
Freshman Abbie Cooley (Castle Rock, Co./Castle View HS) tossed in a career-high 15 points to lead the Knights in scoring. Freshman Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) had 13 points and eight rebounds while Coors had 10 points. Senior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) added nine points.
Calvin shot 43.6 percent from the field and was 18 of 24 (.750) at the free throw line and 8 of 20 (.400) from three-point range. Calvin held a 42-31 rebounding advantage and limited the Comets to 37.3 percent field goal shooting including 14.2 percent in the first half.
The Knights will now await the outcome of Saturday's MIAA competition to determine which destination it will travel to next Tuesday night for a first round MIAA Tournament game.
