GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– The Calvin women's basketball team will travel to Albion College on Wednesday evening to take on the Brits at 7:30 p.m. in a conference matchup.
The Teams: The Brits are 11-2 overall on the season and 4-1 in the MIAA. The Knights bring a 8-6 overall record and 3-2 MIAA record into the competition.
The Coaches: Doreen Carden is in her 18thyear as head women's basketball coach at Albion College. Carden is the most successful coach in the history of the Albion College women's basketball program leading the Brits to winning seasons 13 out of 17 years. Carden's 17-year record at Albion is 271-177, a winning percentage of .605.As a player, Carden enjoyed success throughout her career. She helped Sterling Heights Stevenson reach the state quarterfinal in 1987 and the state semifinals in 1989. Carden earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Macomb Athletic Conference in 1988 and 1989.
Chuck Winkelman is in his third year as head women's basketball coach at Calvin College.In his first year at the helm of the Knights, Winkelman led Calvin to a 22-6 overall record, a berth in the MIAA Tournament Championship game and a trip to the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament. The NCAA Division III Tournament appearance was the 18th in program history. Winkelman arrived at Calvin in 2016 after spending the previous six years as head women's basketball coach at Millsaps College in Mississippi. Winkelman received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology from Hamline University (St. Paul, MN) and later received a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Administration from the University of North Texas (Denton, TX). At Hamline, Winkelman was a varsity letter winner in football and was a member of the men's varsity basketball program in different capacities as a student-athlete and student-coach.
The Players: For the Brits, Evelyn Wischmeyer leads the team with a 53.2 three-point percentage, a 92.9 free throw average, 29 assists, and a 14.8 scoring average. Another leader is Rain Hinton who has a 71.9 free throw average, a 7.1 rebound average and a 14.6 scoring average.
For the Knights, Gabby Timmer lead the team with a 9.9 rebound average, 23 blocks, a 17.9 scoring average and a 51.8 field goal average.
