HOLLAND, Mich. – The No. 13 ranked Knights off Calvin cooked the competition at the MIAA Jamboree on a hot, steamy day at the West Ottawa Golf Club in Holland, Michigan. The Knights placed eight runners in the top-12. Calvin took first place with 24 points, 23 points ahead of Albion in second place.
"I am feeling really good, said head coach Brian Diemer. "We executed the race really well in both races. Both squads executed really well, they were patient, and showed a lot of strength. We had a very nice second half of the race, in both races. In this kind of day, when it is brutally hot, you have to evaluate if it is wise to go out too soon and go after something that might become disastrous. I think that our game plan set us up for some really good races today and a chance to recover. To me, other than the placing, that is the most important thing."
The Knights had three of the four fastest times on Saturday. Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the Knights in second place at 25:08.1. In third place was junior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) at 25:25.5. Senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Ill./John Hersey) notched a fourth-place finish at 25:29.0.
In sixth place was sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) at 25:32.9.
Clocking in a time of 26:01.3 was freshman Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in ninth place.
A pack of Knights crossed the finish line in 10th to 12th place on Saturday, with senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian at 26:06.7, junior Nathanael Dick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Home School) at 26:10.1 and sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) at 26.18.5.
Andrew Bill of Albion won the race with a time of 25:08.1.
The Knights return to action on Friday when they travel to Indiana to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
