Three members of the Calvin men's track and field team have received Google Cloud Academic All-District honors in the Division III Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Division.
Receiving all-district honors from Calvin are senior Brendan VanHouten, junior Tyler Johnson and sophomore Jonathan Ellis. All three advance to the national ballot and are now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America consideration.
VanHouten is from Comstock Park, Michigan. He is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School.
This year, VanHouten was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Field Performer in both indoor and outdoor track and field. He helped lead Calvin to MIAA titles both indoor and outdoor this year. During the indoor season, he was the MIAA champion in the weight throw. This spring, he was the MIAA champion in the discus. In 2017 he was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Field Performer after he won three events at the MIAA Championships - the hammer throw, discus and shot put. In doing so he became the first MIAA triple crown champion in the weights since 1902. VanHouten was also named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Performer in 2018. He was a three-time All-MIAA selection in indoor and outdoor track and field.
This spring he established a new Calvin record in the hammer throw with a toss of 193-3. He later qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he finished 11th in the hammer and 13th in the discus.
VanHouten was recently graduated from Calvin with a degree in accounting. He will pursue his master's degree in accounting from Calvin next fall. He is a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and has been a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List.
Johnson is from Springfield, Illinois. He is a graduate of Pleasant Plains High School. Johnson put together a standout pair of seasons in cross country and in track and field this past academic year.
A two-time All-MIAA selection in cross country, Johnson took second at the 2018 MIAA Cross Country Championships, helping lead Calvin to its 32nd straight league title. Two weeks later he helped Calvin claim its 27th Great Lakes Regional title, placing ninth at the regional meet to earn Great Lakes All-Region honors. The following week he placed 185th at the NCAA III Championships as the Knights placed 19th as a team. During the indoor season this winter, he captured MIAA crowns in the 3,000 meters and mile run as he landed a spot on the All-MIAA team and helped Calvin win its third consecutive MIAA indoor title. He later qualified for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships where he placed ninth in the 5,000 meter run.
Johnson is a mechanical engineering major at Calvin. He is a five-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Ellis hails from Baltimore, Maryland. He is a graduate of Towson High School. Ellis also produced a standout set of cross country and track and field seasons during the 2018-19 academic year. During the 2018 cross country season, he placed third at the MIAA Championships to earn a spot on the All-MIAA First Team. He then placed 11th at the Great Lakes Regional meet to land a spot on the Great Lakes All-Region team. At the NCAA III Championships he placed 168th.
During the indoor track and field season, he played a key role in helping Calvin claim its third consecutive MIAA indoor title, taking second in the 5,000 meter run and fourth in the 3,000 meter run at the conference championships. During the oudoor season, he claimed an MIAA title in the 10,000 meter run to earn a spot on the All-MIAA team while helping the Knights capture their seventh straight MIAA outdoor title. He later landed a spot on the Great Lakes All-Region team and qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000 meter run. At the national meet he placed 19th.
At Calvin, Ellis is a computer science major. He is a three-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and was a member of the 2017-18 MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
