Calvin competed in a set of last-chance meets this week, splitting competition between either West Michigan or the western suburbs of Chicago.
On Tuesday, a group of Calvin athletes competed at a last-chance meet hosted by Grand Valley State University. Freshman Derek Ten Pas (Sioux Center, Ia./Sioux Center Christian HS) was sixth in the 800 meters (2:02.85) while freshman Jonathan Jansma (Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potters House) was eighth (2:03.63). In the 400 meter hurdles, freshman Samuel Braak (Spring Lake, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) was third (1:09.51). Junior Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was seventh in the pole vault (13-8 1/4). Senior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) took first in the long jump (22-1) while senior Nathan Van Whye (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) was third (19-9 3/4). Sophomore Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./Sioux Center Christian HS) was eighth in the discus (133-4).
On Thursday at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College, senior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) clocked a time of 14:51.82 while junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) came in at 14:54.77. Sophomore Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) took eighth in the 10,000 meters (31:19.47) with senior Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) 25th (32:29.98) and sophomore Fredrick McWain (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Rapids Catholic Central HS) 29th (32:58.21).
On Friday, Barents took fifth in the long jump (21-4). Two Knights cracked the four-minute mark in the 1,500 meter run with junior Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) 35th (3:59.04) and freshman Ryan Vreeke (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) 41st (3:59.63).
In the 800 meter run, senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was 11th in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.84. The time places him in the top 30 nationally. Senior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) clocked a time of 1:58.73 with senior Jacob Buday (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Central HS) 79th (2:03.58).
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) celebrated running in his hometown by recording a season-best time of 9:10.37 that should place him in the top 15 nationally and put in him strong position to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the third straight year. Junior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea./Seoul Foreign School) also had a season-best time of 9:36.58.
