Members of the Calvin men's track and field team competed at either the Bucknell Bison Classic or Oakland University Golden Grizzly Invitational this weekend.
At Bucknell on Saturday, Calvin's distance runners had a strong afternoon and evening. Junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) posted a time of 9:16.11 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The time ranks 10th on the NCAA Division III performance list. Junior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) was credited with a time of 9:48.26.
In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) posted a career-best time of 30:33.86 that currently ranks 13th nationally. Senior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) also had a time of 31:47.70.
In the 5,000 meters, junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) clocked a time of 14:59.05 while sophomore Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a time of 15:37.30.
At the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational, senior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) took third in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.10. Junior Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) had a season-best time of 55.88 in the 400 meter hurdles that was good for third place.
Senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was seventh in the 400 meters (51.74). Senior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was eighth in the 800 meters (2:01.83).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Veenstra, sophomore Matthew Blanker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and Jeninga took second in 3:30.45.
Calvin returns to action next Friday and Saturday, competing at the Al Owens Classic at Grand Valley State University.
