The Calvin men's indoor track and field team had a busy weekend of action as the team split up its squad with its distance team competing at the Grand Valley State Big Meet while the remainder of the team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet.
At Grand Valley on Friday, Calvin's distance crew had a sizzling set of performances on the track.
In the 800 meters, senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) had a season-best time of 1:55.48 that currently ranks as the fifth-best time in the event in the Great Lakes Region.
The Knights then placed eight competitors in the 5,000 meter run. Junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) turned in a career-best performance in the event, clocking in with a time of 14:33.53 that currently ranks as the 15th-best time in Division III this winter in the event. Sophomore Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) recorded a career-best time of 14:46.50 in the race. The time ranks fourth in the Great Lakes Region this winter.
Johnson and Ellis were part of four Knights to clock sub-15 minute 5K's. Sophomore Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocked in with a career-best time of 14:52.27 that ranks seventh on the Great Lakes Region performance list. Senior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) recorded a career-best time of 14:57.47 that ranks 11th in the Great Lakes Region. Junior Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) put together a career-best time of 15:06.51. Junior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) came in with a time of 15:14.12. Sophomore Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) recorded a time of 15:17.95. Freshman Ryan Vreeke (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) recorded a career-best time of 15:31.00. In addition, sophomore Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) clocked in with a time of 15:36.15.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet on Saturday, Calvin scored 30 points to finish in sixth place in the team standings.
Senior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was sixth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.89). Freshman William Terpstra (Lombard, Il./Timothy Christian HS) was fourth in the mile run (4:39.79). Junior Andrew Huston (Elgin, Il./Harvest Christian Academy) was fourth in the 1,000 meter run (3:18.39).
Freshman Jack Kim (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) placed fourth in the high jump (6-2 1/4). Senior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Valley Christian HS) was fourth in the long jump (21-4 1/4) while junior Nathan Van Whye (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) was sixth (20-9). In the weighth throw, Eric Van Eck (Yorba Linda, Ca./Hope PSP) took seventh with a toss of 48-10 3/4.
In the 4x400 meter relay, Calvin's quartet of Derek TenPas (Sioux Center, Ia./Sioux Center), Jonathan Jansma (Grand Rapids, Mic./The Potter's House), Samuel Braak (Spring Lakes, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) and Matthew Vos (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS).
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it competes at the GVSU Tune-Up Invitational.
