GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's indoor track and field team competed in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday at Aquinas College.
Calvin had a strong set of performances, most notably in the distance and throwing events.
In the 5,000 meter run, senior Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) took first place with a time of 16:00.59 while sophomore Fredrick McWain (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) was fourth (16:25.55).
In the mile run, freshman Ryan Vreke (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) raced to a second place time of 4:29.17 with freshman Morrison Ismond (Ada, Mich./Lowell HS) fifth (4:35.19) and sophomore Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) seventh (4:39.00).
Senior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took first place in the 400 meters (51.97) with senior teammate Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) third (52.50).
Senior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) took third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.98) while junior Christopher Visser (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) was fourth (10.33).
Sophomore Matthew Blanker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh in the 800 meters (2:04.71). In the 1,000 meter run, junior Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was third (2:36.40) and sophomore Justin Varineau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fifth (2:41.55).
In the 3,000 meter run, sophomore Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) raced to the win in a time of 8:50.52 with junior Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) third (8:59.13).
Freshman Joshua King (Romulus, Mich./Woodhaven HS) was sixth in the 200 meters (24.72) while freshman Luke Van Koevering (La Grange Park, Il./Lyons Township) was eighth (24.87).
In the weight throw, senior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took first place with a career-best throw of 58-8 1/2. The throw ranks 19th in the latest NCAA III Indoor rankings. Sophomore Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) was fourth (54-9 1/2). Reynolds also added an eighth place throw of 43-3 3/4 in the shot put.
In the high jump, freshman Jack Kim (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian HS) was second (6-2 1/4). Senior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) was fourth in the long jump (21-4 1/4).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team completed the day by taking third in a time of 3:38.49. The relay consisted of freshman Harold Gee (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Peterson, Blanker and senior Jacob Buday (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Central HS).
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it competes at the Aquinas College Little Meet.
