GULF SHORES, AL - The Calvin men's track and field team opened its 2018 outdoor campaign, competing at the Island Meet held at Gulf Shores Sports Complex. The meet also included teams from Dillard College, Murray State, Principia and Dalton.
The Knights rolled in several events.
In the distance races, Calvin had a big afternoon.
Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the 1,500 meters (4:07.89). Senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) won the 5,000 meters (15:44.26) and senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) won the 800 meters (1:55.94) with junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) a close second (1:56.18). Calvin sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) also cruised to a win in the steeplechase with a time of 9:33.29.
Junior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was a winner in the 110 high hurdles (15.97). Sophomore Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) won the 400 meters with a time of 58.04.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team also took first place with a time of 3:24.95.
The Knights were also strong in the field events.
Junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a winner in both the discus (155-9) and hammer throw (159-1). His throw in the discus was just over a foot shy of his career-best. Sophomore Jordan Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) won the javelin (164-0) while sophomore Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) was second in the shot put (46-9).
Senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) won the pole vault (14-5 1/2) while sophomore Andrew Huston (Elgin, Il./Harvest Christian Academy) won the high jump (5-1 1/4).
Calvin will return home to Grand Rapids later this weekend and will compete against Hope in a non-conference dual meet next Thursday at Zuidema Field.
