KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Calvin clinched a share of its 13th consecutive MIAA regular season title with a 1-0 win at regionally-ranked Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon.
Ranked second nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin (17-1-0) improves to 6-0-0 in league play with one league match left to play.
The only goal of the game came in the 28th minute of play when the Knights sent a cross into the Kalamazoo six-yard box. A Kalamazoo defender attempted to clear the ball out of the air but instead deflected it backwards into the Kalamazoo net for an "own" goal.
The remainder of the game turned into a defensive stalemate. Calvin nearly doubled its lead in the 81st minute when a blast by senior Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) hit the crossbar.
Ranked fourth regionally, Kalamazoo (9-3-2 overall, 3-2-1 MIAA) received a dangerous corner kick chance in the 89th minute but the Knights were able to clear the kick away and run out the remainder of the clock with staunch defensive play.
Calvin held an 8-7 shots at goal advantage. Freshman Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had two saves in goal for Calvin to pitch his fourth consecutive shutout victory.
COACHES COMMENT: "This was such a huge road win for us," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "It wasn't always pretty but we created some really good chances going forward and our defense was spectacular at not breaking today."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Albion next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
