GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 2-ranked Calvin men's soccer team scooted by the Scots of Alma by a 4-0 score Wednesday night at Zuidema Field.
Calvin improves to 14-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the MIAA. The win over Alma gives the Knights sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Freshman Justin Wojcik (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) put the Knights on the board in the 24th minute, smashing in a cross by sophomore Sam Twigg (Auckland, New Zealand). The play was ignited by a long kick by freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Alma (5-7 overall, 2-1-0 MIAA) threatened to level the score on a breakaway against the run of play by Noah Canlas but Wunder was able to come off his line and smother the shot at the top of the box.
In the 60th minute, sophomore Hunter Olson (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) cranked in his 10th goal of the season on an assist from Twigg.
Twigg netted his eighth goal of the season in the 63rd minute, lashing in a shot just inside the near post on a feed from Wojcik. Twigg tallied against just over a minute later, heading a shot across the line after receiving a corner kick from senior Dillon Weldy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with Weldy drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin outshot Alma 30-5 with Wunder posting his first collegiate shutout in goal.
