The Calvin men's lacrosse team was defeated by the Alma College Scots in a 7-6 thriller Friday night at Zuidema Field.
The Knights started the game strong scoring the first goal of the contest within the first minute. The goal came from senior Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) to take an early one goal lead.
About two minutes later the Scots answered back with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1.
Halfway through the first quarter the Knights found the back of the cage again with a goal from freshman Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich. / Novi High School) to take the lead back once again.
Later in the first the Scots went on a three-goal streak to take the 4-2 lead over the Knights.
The Knights fought back hard and with two minutes left in the quarter Foster scored another to cut the Alma lead to one goal.
With about a minute to go in the first the Knights got on the board again with a goal from senior Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) to tie the game at 4-4.
The first quarter concluded with the game tied 4-4.
In the second quarter the Scots scored two unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead over the Knights.
The Knights battled hard but could not find a way to score.
At halftime the Knights were behind 6-4.
In the third quarter once again, the Knights were held scoreless, while the Scotts added one more goal to their lead.
At the end of the third the Scots lead the Knights 7-4.
In the fourth quarter the Knights fought back hard the whole way and were rewarded with three minutes left to go the Knights got a goal from sophomore Connor Wysong (Holland, Mich. / Holland Christian) to bring the Scotts lead down to two goals.
With about 29 seconds left in the game Foster struck again for his third goal of the night to bring the Knights within one.
The Knights fought hard till the end, gaining one final possession but just fell short on the night.
The game concluded with an Alma victory over the Knights 7-6.
Knights goalie Gerrit Kurtycz (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville) had an amazing game with 20 saves on the night.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday to face Trine at Zuidema Field at 6 P.M. with a berth in the four-team MIAA Tournament on the line.
