GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's golf team kicked off the 2018-2019 season last weekend at the Lou Collins Memorial Tournament placing fourth on Friday with a total of 303 strokes and third on Saturday with a total of 593 strokes. The Knights are coming off a first-place finish in the MIAA regular season championship last year, but took second in the MIAA Spring Tournament.
The Knights graduated Ben VanScoyk and John Van Noord after both earned All-MIAA first team honors last season. VanScoyk also reached the NCAA III Tournament individually last May and was named a second team Division III All-American. Van Noord qualified for the 2017 NCAA III Tournament as a junior. Van Noord and VanScoyk both share the Calvin single-season record for best scoring average in an MIAA season (71.8 strokes-per-round).
Head coach, Brian Bolt stated, "Though sorry to see the high performing group of seniors from last year's team graduate, we are very excited about this year's team. We have some excellent returners with experience that we anticipate will take another step this year. We have five returning players, and seven freshmen, so the whole culture of the team is different. The new guys bring a lot of talent and energy, and the veterans are prepared to carry over and teach the best of Calvin golf to the newcomers."
The Knights look to qualify for the spring tournament for the seventh straight year. The top four teams from the MIAA's fall regular season will qualify for the MIAA's 54 hole NCAA spring qualifying tournament.
