March 9, 2017: Welcome to Calvin College Golf
The Calvin College Men’s Golf Team began officially in the 1953-54 academic year competing within the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Though some of the MIAA teams have changed through the years, the conference has had the same 8 men’s golf teams for the last decade. http://www.miaa.org/sports/mgolf/index
Over the years, some changes have occurred to the conference format. Currently, the MIAA Championship is contested in the fall, and the battle to represent the MIAA in the NCAA D3 National Tournament happens in the spring. Calvin also plays additional non-conference tournaments in both fall and spring.
The MIAA league championship include six 18-hole rounds of golf. 5 Players compete, and the top 4 scores make up the team score. The league championship goes to the team with lowest cumulative stroke total. The first four rounds are hosted at home courses of league colleges, and the last two are at a neutral site.
The teams that finish 1-4 in the fall are eligible to compete for the NCAA D3 National Tournament Automatic Qualifier in the spring. The format is a 54 hole tournament, again cumulative strokes. The first round is played at the host course of the team that finishes second in the fall. The final 36 holes are played at the fall league champion’s home course. The winning team is granted an automatic bid to the national tournament, which this year is in New York.
We would love to see you at one of our tournaments, and please check out more about Calvin College Men’s Golf on this blog, and follow us through the year via Twitter (@calvin_golf) and Instagram (@calvin_golf).
