Calvin Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Dutchmen

Calvin dropped both ends of a Tuesday doubleheader with Hope on Tuesday as the Flying Dutchmen took three of four from the Knights.


Hope jumped on Calvin for four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The Flying Dutchmen collected 14 hits in the seven-inning victory.

Calvin had four hits in the loss with the lone run on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) in the third.

Freshman Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy) took the loss for the Knights, striking out three and walking three.


Calvin (5-8 overall, 1-3 MIAA) built a 6-1 lead on the strength of a five-run second inning. Padilla had run-scoring singles in the first and second while freshman Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) also had an RBI single in the second.

Hope (10-1 overall, 3-1 MIAA) touched up Calvin's bullpen for four runs in the sixth inning to cut the gap to 6-5. The Flying Dutchmen then tied the game in the eighth on an extra-base hit.

In the top of the ninth, Hope loaded the bases on three straight walks and with one out, scored the go-ahead run on a hit batter. A bases-loaded walk and a pair of two-run RBI singles bumped the Hope lead up to 12-6. Freshman Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) got a run back for Calvin in the bottom half on an RBI single but the comeback was stopped shortly after.

Hope had 14 hits while Calvin had 10.

Senior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg got the start and went the first five innings, striking out three and walking two.

Hung was 3 for 4 at the plate for Calvin with two runs scored. Padilla and junior Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had two hits apiece.

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Trine for a Thursday conference doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
