The Calvin University Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team tied the Western Michigan University Broncos 5-5 on Thursday night.
In the first period the Broncos came out quick and scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game to set the Knights on the back foot early. The Knights fought back hard late in the first but could not find the back of the net.
The first period concluded with the Broncos leading the Knights 2-0.
In the second period the Knights got on the board three minutes in with a goal from Jacob Siebenga. About twenty seconds later the Knights tied the game with a goal from Justin Davis with the assists from Josh Hartlein and Joe Wilkinson. With about seven minutes to go in the period the Knights took the lead with a goal from Jared Virtanen with the assists coming from Wilkinson and Riley Robertson. With thirty seconds left to go in the period the Broncos tied the game at 3-3.
The second period concluded with the game tied 3-3.
In the third period the Knights took the lead once again just two minutes in with another goal from Siebenga. About halfway through the period the Broncos tied the game once again. A minute later the Broncos took the lead 5-4. With about six minutes to go in the period the Knights tied the game once again with another tally from Siebenga to complete his hattrick on the night.
The third period concluded with the game tied 5-5.
In overtime both teams recieved good chances in front of goal but neither team could put one away.
At the end of overtime the game was still locked in a tie 5-5.
The game headed into a shootout in which the Knights were defeated. Although, ACHA does not recognize shootouts so the game ends in a tie on the record books.
Knights Goaltender Darin Fox had a strong game with 29 saves on the night.
