The Calvin University Knights D1 hockey team defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles 7-1 on Saturday night.
In the first period the Knights came out strong, but it was the Eagles who got on the board first just three minutes into the game. About halfway through the period the Knights tied the game with a goal from Jared Virtanen with assists from Jacob Siebenga and Will Houskamp. Two minutes later the Knights found the back of the net again with a goal from Virtanen with halpers from Houskamp and Siebenga.
The first period concluded with the Knights leading the Eagles 2-1.
In the second period the Knights took control of the game. The Knights quickly added to their lead three minutes into the period with a goal from Siebenga with the assist from Virtanen. The Knights found the back of the net again about halfway through the period with a goal from Riley Robertson with the helpers from Joe Wilkinson and Virtanen. The Knights tallied one more goal with about two seconds left to go in the period as Virtanen completed his hat-trick with the helper from Siebenga.
The second period concluded with the Knights in command 5-1.
In the third period the Knights added even more to their lead. Just four minutes into the period the Knights got another goal from Roberston with assists from Virtanen and Siebenga. The Knights finished off their scoring with another goal about three minutes later coming from Austin Huizenga with the assists from Josh Hartlein and Brandon VanOphem.
The game concluded with a Knights victory over the Eagles 7-1.
Knights Goaltender Darin Fox had another big game with 35 saves.
The Knights return to action on Friday the 18th to take on Aquinas College at Eagles Ice Center at 8:10PM.
