The Calvin University Knights defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Friday night 4-2.
The Calvin Uniersity Knights D1 hockey team kicked off their season at home on Friday night as they faced off against the Eastern Michigan Eagles.
In the first period both teams came out with high energy and tempo. The Knights looked for the opening goal of the game but could not find a way past the Eagles goaltender. The Eagles also pushed the Knights back, but the Knights defense held strong.
The first period concluded with the game still locked at 0-0.
In the second period the Eagles got on the scoreboard first with a goal within the first minute of the period. The Knights came back quickly scoring less than a minute later with a goal from Christian Gums with the assist from Jared Virtanen. About a minute later the Eagles took the lead again to bring the score to 2-1. Once again the Knights quickly answered back with a goal from Jacob Siebenga with another assist from Virtanen. With about seven minutes to go in the second period the Knights took the lead with a goal from Garrett Pitter with helpers from Graham Kormash and Nick Workman.
The second period concluded with the Knights leading the Eagles 3-2.
In the third period the Knights came out strong and put pressure on the Eagles. About halfway through the period the Knights put up another one on the board with a power play goal from Virtanen with assists coming from Siebenga and Gums. The Eagles fought back hard but could not find a way through the Knights defense.
The game concluded with a Knights victory over the Eagles 4-2.
Knights Goaltender Darin Fox had a big night with 26 saves.
