The Calvin Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated the Western Michigan Broncos 6-2 on Thursday night.
In the first period the Knights came out quick and strong and quickly got some good chances in front of the Broncos net, but the Knights could not put one past the goaltender. The Broncos bounced back hard and got some good chances of their own, but the Knights defense held strong and kept the Broncos off the scoresheet. Late in the period the Knights struck first with a goal from Jared Virtanen with the assist from Keegan Weckesser. At the end of the first the Knights went into the break with a 1-0 lead over the Broncos.
In the second period the game began to open up some more and both teams recieved really good chances because of it. About halfway through the period the Broncos got on the board to tie the game at 1-1. Five minutes later the Knights found the back of the net again with a goal from Riley Robertson with the assist from Jared Virtanen. With less than ten seconds to go in the period the Broncos tied the game at 2-2. The second period concluded with the game tied 2-2.
In the third period the Knights really put the pressure on the Broncos. Five minutes into the period the Knights reclaimed the lead with a goal from Christian Gums with the helper from Jared Virtanen. Two minutes later the Knights added to their lead with a goal from Samuel Dexter with the assist from Brandon VanOphem. A minute later the Knights tallied another this time the goal came from Jared Virtanen with the helper from Nick Workman. A few minutes later the Knights struck again with a goal from Samuel Dexter with the assist from Josh Hartlein. The game concluded with a Knights victory over the Broncos 6-2.
Knights Goaltender Alex Gross had a strong game with 28 saves on the night.
