The Calvin Knights ACHA D1 Hockey Team defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 6-2 on Saturday night.
In the first period the Knights came out strong and they quickly found the early lead with a goal from Nick Workman with the assist from Josh Hartlein. Just a minute later the Knights added another goal this time coming from Christian Gums with the helper from Riley Robertson. Less than a minute after the Knights had taken the two goal lead the Redbirds got on the board to cut the Knights lead down to one. About halfway through the period the Knights found the back of the net again with a goal from Jared Virtanen with the assist from Keegan Weckesser. The first period concluded with the Knights in the lead 3-1.
In the second period the Redbirds looked to cut the Knights lead down once again, but they could not find a way past the Knights defense. Late in the second period the Knights added another goal to their lead this time from Brandon VanOphem. The second period ended with the Knights in the lead 4-1.
In the third period the Knights tallied two more goals the first coming from Christian Gums for his second of the night. The second goal of the period for the Knights came from Garrett Medina. The Redbirds ended up getting a consulation goal late in the third to make the score 6-2. In the end the Knights came out on top with a 6-2 win over the Redbirds.
Knights goaltender Darin Fox had a great night with 32 saves.
