GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Penny Allen-Cook has recognized teams on the 2018-19 MIAA Team GPA Award list. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2018-19 school year, 13 of Calvin's 21 varsity athletics teams achieved this distinction.
Ten of Calvin's women's teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while three of the men's teams also achieved the feat. Calvin teams receiving the honor are as follows; women's cross country, women's golf, women's volleyball, women's swimming and diving, women's indoor track and field, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's outdoor track and field, women's softball, women's basketball, men's cross country, men's indoor track and field and men's outdoor track and field.
Under the leadership of head coach Dr. Jerry Bergsma, the Calvin women's golf team had the highest Calvin team GPA at 3.615, marking the highest cumulative team grade point average in program history.
Led by Brian Diemer, the women's cross country team continued a remarkable streak, earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.612. The Calvin women's cross country team is one of only two teams joining the Hope women's cross country team as the only teams to receive the award all 21 years it has been presented.
Dr. Amber Warners saw her women's volleyball team honored for the 17th time with a grade point average of 3.550.
Dan Gelderloos put his women's swimming and diving team on the MIAA Team GPA Award list for the 12th time and for the sixth consecutive year as his squad posted a 3.489 grade point average.
Bret Otte put his indoor women's track and field team on the list for the fourth consecutive year, recording a team grade point average of 3.474.
Kevin Van Haitsma had his team once again on the list, posting a 3.451 grade point average, marking the fifth straight year his program has been so honored.
Becky Hilgert had her softball team pick up the award for the sixth time in program history and for the first time since 2009 as the Knights posted a 3.429 team grade point average.
Bret Otte's women's outdoor track and field team received the award for the 12th straight season, posting a team GPA of 3.432. In addition, the Calvin women's basketball team was an MIAA Team GPA Award recipient for the 12th straight year, coming in with a grade point average of 3.408.
Otte also had both his men's indoor and outdoor track and field teams on the list. The men's indoor team had a 3.474 team grade point average to achieve the award for the fourth straight year while his men's outdoor team came in at 3.425 to achieve the academic award for the third straight year and for the fifth time in program history.
Finally, the men's cross country team lead by Diemer posted a 3.464 grade point average to land on the honor list for the 11th straight year and for the 14th time in program history.
The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year.
