Calvin Women's Cross Country Wins Calvin Knight Invite

The 20th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team motored its way to a first place triumph Saturday morning at the Calvin Knight Invite.

Calvin posted a first place team score of 32 points. The Knights placed five runners in the top 10 led by senior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, Mn./St. Croix Preparatory HS) who placed third with a time of 17:51.

Senior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was sixth in 18:16. Senior McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) then led a tight pack of three as she placed eighth (18:36) while freshman Johanna Admiraal (Cincinnati, Oh./Towson HS) was ninth (18:37) and sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) 10th (18:38).

Calvin four more runners inside the top 20 with junior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) placing 15th (19:09), freshman Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash/Lynden Christian HS) taking 16th (19:10), junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) placing 18th (19:16) and freshman Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) placing 19th (19:18). Sophomore Lindsey Fox (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 21st (19:22) and junior Kate McLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) 23rd (19:26).

"I was extremely impressed with the way we supported one another," said Calvin head coach Brian Diemer. "We did not run as individuals. We ran as a team. I loved our pack running and the way we worked for the finish line. This team has big dreams and big goals and today was a solid first step in where we want to go."

Calvin will now break for two weeks and will prepare its varsity group for a trip to the state of Washington where the Knights will compete at the University of Washington Sundodger Invitational on September 17. Meanwhile another group from Calvin's cross country team will compete at the Spartan Invitational that same day.
