OLIVET, Mich. – The Calvin volleyball team improved to 14-0 on the year with a 3-0 victory at Olivet. Calvin has now won 22-straight road matches. The Knights improve to 8-0 in the MIAA and Olivet falls to 10-10 and 2-6 in the MIAA. The Knights swept the Comets, 25-12, 25-11, 25-22. Calvin is now 79-2 all-time against Olivet.
"I am very proud of the team," said head coach Amber Warners. "Olivet played very well and they challenged us today. I am happy with how we responded and we will have to get ready for Friday."
The Knights jumped out to an early lead on the Comets on Tuesday, taking an 8-2 lead behind the serve of junior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron). The Knights would close the set on a 7-1 run to take the set. 25-12. Calvin recorded six service aces in the first set, including three from Kristen Vyletel. Senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) had five kills.
Calvin started the second set on a 3-0 run behind serve of junior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian). The Knights would not give the lead back the rest of the set. The Maroon and Gold would close the set on a 9-0 run behind the serve of Laura Danhoff and take the set 25-11. Calvin would hit .371 in the second set and hold Olivet to hitting, -.038.
The Knights would find themselves in a battle in the third set. Sophomore Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) started the with an ace to get the ball rolling. Trailing 4-3, junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) tied the set with a cross-court kill and Laura Danhoff would give the Knights the lead with a slam down the middle. The Comets would fight back and take a 7-6 lead, sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) would stop the run with a kill. Olivet would once again take a lead at 9-7 and would push the lead to 15-12. Coming out of a timeout, the Knights would rally with a 5-0 behind the serve of Kristen Vyletel. Calvin would take a 24-19 lead, before Olivet would chip the lead to 24-22. Tessa Van Laare ended the match at 25-22.
Laura Danhoff had a game-high 13 kills and Anna Kamp followed with 10. Jenna Lodewyk tallied 36 assists. Anna Kamp led the Knights with eight digs and Laura Danhoff had three blocks. The Knights recorded 12 aces, including six from Kristen Vyletel.
The Knights return to action on Friday when they travel to Albion to face the Britons.
