Calvin Women's Track and Field Athletes Compete at Last-Chance Meets

Calvin competed in a set of last-chance meets this week, splitting competition between either West Michigan or the western suburbs of Chicago.

On Tuesday, a group of Calvin athletes competed at a last-chance meet hosted by Grand Valley State University. Junior Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) took first in the javelin throw with a heave of 124-11. Freshman Kathryn Elgersma (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian) also had a throw of 100-1.

In the 800 meters, freshman Haley Weesies (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville Calvin Christian HS) had a season-best time of 2:27.52 while junior Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was right behind in 2:28.47.

On Thursday and Friday Calvin athletes competed at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College. In the 5,000 meter run senior Maria Kuiper (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) came through with a time of 18:49.25. The race of the night came from junior Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) who took fifth in the 10,000 meter run with a career-best time of 36:53.18 that ranks 29th nationally and sixth in the Great Lakes Region.

Rozell competed again in the javelin and took sixth with a throw of 120-9. Senior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) was third in the 1,500 meter run 4:33.80. In the steeplechase, sophomore Annie Needs (Peru, Il./Saint Bede Academy) clocked a time of 11:40.53 while senior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) ran a time of 11:52.19.
