Women's Tennis Tops Luther to Close Out Florida Swing

ORLANDO, Fla. - Calvin closed out its spring trip with a 6-3 victory over Luther College Friday afternoon. The Knights improve to 7-3 on the season.

Calvin fell behind 2-1 after doubles play but rallied with five singles wins to claim the victory.

Sophomores Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and Leah Newhof (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up the lone doubles point for Calvin with an 8-2 triumph over Shelby Cook and Britta Pressler.

Newhof then made quick work of Devon Bourget at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-0 to up her singles record to 14-4. Brouwer was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Pressler at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Maya Klopfenstein (Goshen, Ind./Concord HS) pulled out a clutch 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) win at No. 4 singles over Stephanie Almquist.

Freshman Grace Brown (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) then topped Ellie Hemker 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 at No. 5 singles. Brown was one of two Knights to win in third set thrillers as sophomore Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) was a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 winner ovver Kelsey Kruse at No. 6 singles.

Calvin will travel to Spring Arbor next Thursday for a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
