HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women's tennis team started the season at the Hope Invitational. Friday marked the first day of the two-day tournament.
In the doubles A Draw, freshman Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) started the day falling to Hope's Amanda Bandrowski and Quincey Glupker, 8-2. The Calvin duo ended the day with an 8-1 victory over Alyssa Leffler and Samantha Joppa of UW-Oshkosh.
In the doubles B Draw, senior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home School) and sophomore Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) opened the day with an 8-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh's Monica Micoliczyk and Ashlee Polena. The Maroon and Gold then fell to Abby Perkins and Livia Christman of Grand Valley, 8-2. Freshman Alexis Bonner (Alto, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and freshman Sydney Ellsworth (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) dropped the first match of the day to Chorney and Natalie Rahrig of Hope, 8-1. They then bounced Kelley Hodyl and Lesley Kutnick of UWO, 9-7.
Three Knights competed in the singles A draw. Anna Asfour fell to Abby Perkins of GVSU. Leah Newhof recorded two victories on Friday, defeating Bailey Sagen of UWO, 6-3, 6-1, and Alexa Sweeney of GVSU, 6-4, 7-5. Madeline Brouwer fell to Claire Hallock of Hope in the first match, 6-0, 6-1, but bounced back in the second match to down Hannah Peters of UW-Oshkosh, 6-2, 6-3.
In the singles B Draw, Lark Foote edged Lesley Kutnink of UW-Oshkosh, 6-1, 6-7 (4), (10). She was then defeated by Samantha Schrepferman of GVSU, 6-1, 6-0. Sydney Ellsworth started the day with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Heiniger of GVSU. She then rallied to defeat Ashlee Polena of UW-Oshkosh, 6-1, 6-2. Alexis Bonner opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Rachel Sumner of GVSU. She finished the day with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Monica Micoliczyk of UW-Oshkosh.
The Knights return to action on Saturday.
