Women’s Tennis Overwhelms Olivet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's tennis team finished a busy week with a 9-0 victory over Olivet on Saturday afternoon. The Knights defeated Spring Arbor, Alma, and Olivet this week to improve to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. The Comets fell to 4-10 on the year and 0-4 in MIAA play.

"We played a solid match today to cap off a 3-0 week," said Calvin head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I thought we played sharp in doubles to set the tone. No. 1 doubles came out and played one of their cleanest matches on the year. Claire played well at No. 1 singles and really helped lead the way. We need to keep our momentum heading into a big match at Albion next week Wednesday."

The senior duo of Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) and Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) made quick work of Maddy Drikakis and Breanne Redlaff at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.

Junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) bounced Isabel Snyder and Sydnie Weller at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.

Senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home school) completed the sweep of doubles play over Rae Claramunt and Rachael Hager at No. 2 doubles, 8-6.

Jessica Bouma started singles play defeating BreAnne Rudlaff at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Claire Spoelhof clinched the match at No. 1 singles, downing Maddy Drikakis, 6-1, 6-2.

Anna Asfour topped Rae Claramunt at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 3 singles, Ellie Benzel defeated Isabel Snyder, 6-3, 6-1.

Junior Kari Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) brought out the broom on Taylor Robbins at No. 6 singles, sweeping, 6-0, 6-0.

Lark Foote closed the match at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Amanda Gruzka.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday at Albion.
