GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team started the 2017 season with a 9-0 victory over Cornerstone on Thursday evening. The match was also the first of the season for Cornerstone.
"It was a great first match for us," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We played some good, solid doubles and we played very sharp in singles."
Senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich.) started the night with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles over Kali Holmes and Madeline Grose. The senior duo of Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) earned an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, over Lauren Brendel and Ana Hoezee. Junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) earned the final doubles victory of the day at No. 2 doubles over Sierra Griffith and Hannah Ottosen, 8-1.
Micaela Seazzu picked up the first singles point of the night at No. 4 singles over Sierra Griffith, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Ellie Benzel made quick work of Hannah Ottosen, 6-0, 6-0.
Claire Spoelhof was victorious over Lauren Brendel at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Jessica Bouma earned the victory over Ana Hoezee at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) secured a victory in her first dual match at Calvin with a victory at No. 5 singles over Madeline Grose, 6-0, 6-0.
Lark Foote finished the sweep at No. 6 singles, defeating Kali Holmes, 6-0, 6-2.
The Knights return to action on Feb. 18 at Aquinas.
