Calvin Women's Swimming and Diving Takes Early Lead at MIAA Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming and diving team opened the MIAA Championships in winning form Wednesday night at the Holland Aquatic Center.

Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of sophomore Hannah Chao (Farmington, Mich./North Farmington HS), senior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS), freshman Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and senior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) cruised to a first place time of 7:35.26. The time was a season-best and NCAA III B' cut qualifying time for the Knights.

It also bumps Calvin into an early lead in the team standings as the Knights have 40 points, six points ahead of Albion heading Thursday.

"Our women did a great job handling the first event of the meet," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "Hannah Chao led off with a personal-best (1:53.99) and the last three women responded very well."

Action continues on Thursday with prelims set to begin at 10 a.m.
