Calvin captured first place at its own Calvin Quad Invitational this weekend inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
Over the two-day competition, Calvin posted a first place team score of 916 points, finishing 52 points ahead of second place Albion.
The Knights posted a number of first and second place finishes over the weekend to help pile up points.
Senior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) had a big meet individually, winning the 100 freestyle (53.22) and 200 freestyle (1:57.36) while placing second in the 500 freestyle (5:17.74). Junior Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) won the 50 freestyle in 24.33 while placing fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.12) and ninth in the 100 free (55.71).
Senior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) was a weekend warrior in the long-distance freestyle events, taking second in the 1650 (18:37.84) and third in the 500 (5:23.75).
Sophomore Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) was second in the 200 IM (2:14.75) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:!2.76).
Freshman Samantha Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) won the 200 breaststroke (2:33.14) and was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.60).
Sophomore Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.55).
Calvin sparkled in the diving events. Sophomore Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) took the title on the one-meter board (388.70) and was second on the three-meter board (372.55). Sophomore Hannabeth Magnussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) won the three-meter board (413.45) and was third on the one-meter board (376.35). With their performances, Smith and Magnussen both earned NCAA III Regional qualifying scores.
In addition, Calvin swept all five relay events. Calvin's winning 400 freestyle relay team consisted of senior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Chao, Serino and senior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan HS). They won the race in a time of 3:37.30. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Gunderson, Chao, Alyssa Oezer and Serino clocked in with a first place time of 1:37.84. Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Chao, Sonday, Jenna Oezer and Serino were winners in a time of 4:02.23. In the 200 medley relay, the Calvin quartet of Chaco, Sonday, Jenna Oezer and Gunderson took home the blue ribbon with a time of 1:49.77. Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Serino, freshman Valerie Edewaard (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), Murphy and Smith won in a time of 8:02.15.
"We had a great effort by our entire program all weekend," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "What impressed me the most was the attention to detail everyone had to get through the weekend. Our teamwork on deck was at a high level, and finally, the motivation to score points for Calvin was awesome to see."
Ranked 16th nationally, Calvin will now break until next Saturday when it travels to Wheaton for a non-conference dual meet slated to start at 2 p.m. (EST).
