OLIVET, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team defeated Olivet College 2-0 in its final conference matchup of the season.
With the win Calvin clinches third place in the final MIAA regular season standings as well as the third seed for the MIAA Tournament. Calvin will host sixth-seeded Kalamazoo Saturday night at 7 p.m. in a first round MIAA Tournament match at Zuidema Field.
Both teams came out battling in the first half but it was the Knights who got on the board in the 32ndminute of play to take the lead. Scoring for Calvin was senior Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich. / Calvin Christian). This was Van Vliet's ninth goal of the season.
The Knights wasted no time as a minute later in play, freshman Elizabeth Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich. / Northpointe Christian) fired one in the net to give Calvin the 2-0 lead and record her third goal of the season.
The Knights outshot the Comets 11 to 5. Calvin goal keeper sophomore Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) had two saves on goal to help the Knights shut out the Comets.
Calvin is now 9-4-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the MIAA.
Head Coach Emily Ottenhoff stated, "Pleased with our performance today. Olivet is not an easy place to come play and we found a way to come out with a result. We are excited to be part of post season play again this year, we don't take that for granted. We have to get back to work tomorrow and try to get better before Saturday."
