ALBION, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team fought through fierce weather conditions to gain a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Albion Saturday afternoon.
With the tie, the Knights are assured of a spot in the six-team MIAA Tournament. Calvin could also gain a first round home game with a win at Olivet next Wednesday.
Saturday's match featured a lengthy weather delay during regulation time. The game then ended with just over five minutes left in the second overtime due to thunderstorm activity at the site. The total time of competition was three hours and five minutes.
All of the scoring took place in the opening 30 minutes of play. Albion's Riley Burnette scored in the 23rd minute of play. In the 30th minute, Calvin sophomore Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) scored unassisted.
Calvin pressured late in regulation, earning three corner kicks. Each time garnered one shot in overtime.
Calvin (8-4-3 overall, 3-2-2 MIAA) finished the match with a 15-10 edge in shots at goal including 10-4 in the second half and overtime sessions.
Sophomore Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) had five saves in goal for the Knights. Megan Bricely had five saves for Albion (7-7-2 overall, 4-2-1 MIAA).
Calvin will travel to Olivet next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. conference match.
