Calvin Women's Soccer Falls To Wheaton in Close Match

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Wheaton 2-1 Wednesday night at Zuidema Field.

The Thunder came into the competition 3-1-0 on the season and the Knights came in 3-0-1. 

Wheaton struck first in the sixth minute of the game with a shot to the lower corner by senior Chelsea Gnan to take the lead 1-0. 

The Knights responded in the 29th minute where senior Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich. Calvin Christian) gained possession of a loose ball just outside the eight-yard box and powered one into the net to tie it up. This was Van Vliet's fourth goal of the season and is the Knights leading scorer. 

Both teams came out strong in the second half looking to take the lead. In the 13th minute Wheaton struck again. Sophomore Isabelle Oliver scored for the Thunder to take the lead 2-1.

The Knights fought hard to even things back up but fell short. Wheaton outshot Calvin 13-7 on the evening. Calvin's goal keeper, sophomore Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) had three saves on goal. 

The Knights will host Concordia Wisconsin Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
