KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Two late goals proved to be the undoing for the Calvin women's soccer team Tuesday night at Kalamazoo College.
Calvin carried a 2-1 lead into the 74th minute but the host Hornets scored the equalizer on a penalty kick with 16:55 remaining and then scored the go-ahead goal with just 2:15 left in regulation.
Libby Munoz scored all three goals for Kalamazoo including the first goal of the game which came in the 17th minute to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
Calvin countered with a tying goal three minutes later as senior Camie Rietberg (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) headed in a corner kick taken by freshman Grace Visser (Coopersville, Mich./Unity Christian HS).
Freshman Kelli Mannes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Christian HS) then put the Knights up 2-1 by scoring with just 3:02 left in the first half.
Calvin (9-4-0 overall, 6-3-0 MIAA) maintained the lead until the Hornets were awarded a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Munoz made good on the spot kick and the game was tied 2-2.
Neither team mounted a shot on goal until Munoz broke free in the waning minutes for the game-winning goal.
With the win, Kalamazoo (7-5-0 overall, 6-3-0 MIAA) moved into a tie for second place with Calvin in the MIAA standings. Kalamazoo held a 17-7 shots at goal advantage.
Freshman Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) came up with two saves for the Knights.
