GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team hosted Olivet College on Saturday evening in the first game of the Knights' Homecoming Weekend. In a hard-fought conference battle, the Knights fell to the Comets by a score of 2-1.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 9-3-0 overall and into second place in the MIAA standings with a 6-2-0 conference mark. The Comets improve to 7-4-0 and 5-3-0 in the MIAA.
Olivet took an early lead when senior Isabelle Leon capitalized on a breakaway chance in the fifth minute.
Freshman Maria VanderLei (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded the Knights' first shot in the 20th minute, sparking Calvin's offense. The Knights controlled play for the remainder of the half, firing four additional shots before the break.
At the half, the Knights held a 5-2 shots advantage.
Four minutes into the second half, freshman Grace Visser (Coopersville, Mich./Unity Christian) scored her first collegiate goal, knotting the score at one. Senior Sydney Barcey (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) crossed the ball in to center of the box and Visser settled it before firing it into the Comets' net.
After high intensity back-and-forth play, Olivet regained its lead in the 79th minute as Leon scored on another breakaway opportunity.
In the final 13 minutes of play, Calvin logged five shots. Despite late pressure from the Knights, they were unable to find the back of the net for the game-tying goal.
Calvin finished with a 16-10 shots advantage, including six off the foot of freshman Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian).
Freshman goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hill Northern) recorded two saves on the evening.
The Knights are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
