GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team picked up a key mid-season conference victory on Tuesday evening, defeating Adrian College, 1-0.
With the win, the Knights improve to 9-2-0 on year with a 6-1-0 MIAA mark, as they move into a tie for first place with Hope College (8-1-0, 6-1-0 MIAA). The Bulldogs fall to 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.
"We got a goal early and that really helped," said head coach Mark Recker. "We played a really good team that really wanted to score a goal and win. Psychologically we did not take them out of the game tonight. We did close the game out and kept them scoreless. Amy came up big a number of times.
The Knights' lone goal came in the 16th minute of the evenly-matched first half. Junior Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) put the ball on the foot of Calvin leading goal-scorer Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian), who capitalized on the chance in the box.
Calvin held a 5-3 shots advantage at the halftime break.
The Knights' offense stepped up its pressure in the second half, notching four shots by the 60th minutes. Koops, Van Vliet and Maria VanderLei all recorded shots in the offensive surge.
With 20 minutes left to play, the Bulldogs' offense tried to knot the score, but could not capitalize on three consecutive shots. In the 77th minute, Calvin goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) came up with a big save on a Bulldog breakaway to preserve the Knights' lead.
The Knights disallowed Adrian of a shot on back-to-back corner kicks in the final ten minutes of play.
Calvin outshot its visitors 13-8 on the evening. Koops finished with six shots, while VanderLei had four. Kliewer recorded three saves in her fifth shutout victory of the season.
