In its seventh game in 13 days, the Calvin women's soccer team hosted the Belles of Saint Mary's College in an MIAA matchup. Coming off a 3-1 victory over Adrian College, the Knights defeated their visitors by a score of 5-0 to improve to 5-3-0 on the season with a 4-1-0 conference mark, while the Belles fell to 1-6-0 on the year and 0-5-0 in the MIAA.

Calvin currently sits in third place in the MIAA individual standings with 12 points and sits two points back of second place Hope and two points ahead of fourth place Olivet.

Calvin went ahead early, scoring two goals by the 13th minute.

Senior Brianna Russell (Plainwell, MI/Delton-Kellogg HS) got the Knights on the board first in the 9th minute, her goal assisted by Allie Corp (Livonia, MI/Stevenson HS). Just over three minutes later, Corp increased Calvin's lead to two goals, Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and Russell earning assists on the play.

At halftime, the Knights had outshot their visitors 9-0.

Calvin came out with lots of energy to start the second half. 14 seconds into the half, freshman Alyson Katje (Kalamazoo, MI/Kalamazoo Christian HS) fed sophomore Bekah Maguire (Holland, MI/Holland Christian HS) who sent the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to put the Knights up 3-0.

Just over eight minutes later, Katje found Maguire again for a fourth Calvin goal.

With just under five minutes left to play, Russell scored her second goal of the night, the assist credited to Veenstra.

The Knights didn't allow the Belles to put a shot on goal for the entire contest, recording 27 total shots themselves.

"I thought we did what we needed to do today in order to get a win," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "We are in a busy stretch of games and I thought our second unit really gave us a nice energy lift. I thought today's result showed the importance of the team. We had contributions all the way down our roster. That was good to see and will help us moving forward."

Calvin is back in action on Saturday at Alma College for another MIAA tilt. Game time is at noon.
