Calvin Women's Lacrosse Falls to Albion in MIAA Semifinal Battle

Albion, Mich. – The Calvin women's Lacrosse team fell to Albion College 13-10 in the MIAA Semifinal on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. 

The Brits came out dominant as they took the early 3-0 lead over the Knights.

With one man up, the Knights recorded their first goal of the contest as junior Allyson Mesman (Hudsonville, Mich. / Hudsonville)found the back of the net off of a free position shot to tighten Albion's lead to within two.  

The Brits went on another run of three goals to make it a 6-1 contest. 

Calvin put a stop to Albion's run as senior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington) connected with freshman Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich. / Holt)who blasted one in the net to put the game to within four.

It didn't take long for Albion to answer as less than a minute later the Brits posted another goal to lead 7-2.

A few minutes later, the Brits scored to stretch their lead to six. 

With just over a minute left in the half, Schneemann located the back of the cage to make it 8-3. 

Albion found more opportunity to score with just under thirty seconds left in the half to take the 9-3 lead as the half closed out. 

The Knights came out on fire the second half as they scored two straight goals from Schneemann and Gilbert to tighten Albion's lead to 9-5.

A few minutes later, the Brits put a stop to the Knights run as they recorded another goal to lead by five. 

Calvin putting up a fight, answered less than a minute later as jumior Jaime Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) recorded a goal to put the game back to within four. 

The Knights scored again as Schneemann connected on her third goal of the game to claim a hat trick and make it a 10-7 game. 

Calvin on another hot streak, Gilbert recorded a hat trick to make it a tight contest and Albion called a timeout. 

The Brits finally put a stop to the Knights as they connected on another goal to lead 11-8. 

The two teams continued to battle back and forth, but as the clock ran out, it was the Brits who came out on top with the 13-10 victory.

Leading the Knights was Gilbert with four goals. Schneemann had a hat trick and one assist. Van De burg recorded wo goals Mesman had one goal.

The Brits move on the MIAA Championship on Saturday where they will face Hope College who earlier in the day upset Saint Mary's 13-12.
