Women’s Lacrosse Bashes Britons

ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team downed MIAA-rival Albion on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Knights beat the Britons 10-6 to improve to 3-5 and 1-0 in the MIAA. Albion falls to 2-6 and 1-1 in MIAA action.

"The team played really well today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "We were efficient on our clears and were able to clause lot of turnovers resulting in quality possession time for us. Amanda and E.V. set the tone in the first half and our defense stayed aggressive throughout the entire game. After nine days without a game we're happy with the win and looking forward to playing Saint Mary's on Tuesday night."

Freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) started the scoring in the first two minutes of the game.

Junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) scored a minute later to give Calvin a 2-0 lead.

The Britons cut the Calvin lead to 2-1 with 26:49 left in the first half.

The Knights owned the rest of the first half and close the final 25 minutes on a 4-0 run. Amanda Davio scored on a free position shot. Emma Verrett scored at the 16:26 mark to make it 4-1. Amanda Davio scored the final two goals of the half to give the Knights a 6-1 lead at halftime. Sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) was credited with an assist for the final goal.

Albion opened the second half with two goals to make it a 6-3 game.

Senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) scored with 20 minutes left from a pass from sophomore Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).

Albion scored the next three goals to make it a 7-6 game with 13:10 remaining.

Sophomore Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) gave Calvin some separation with a goal at the 8:36 mark of the second half. Amanda Davio scored her fifth goal of the day with seven minutes left.

Freshman Allyson Mesman (Jenison, Mich./Hudsonville) iced the game with an unassisted goal with 47 second left.

Sophomore Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo. / Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) recorded four saves in the victory.

Amanda Davio led the Knights with four ground balls. Junior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished with a game-high six draw controls.

Emma Verrett caused three Albion turnovers on Saturday. Amanda Davio had a team-high seven shots.

Albion had 26 turnovers in the loss, while Calvin had 13 turnovers.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday at Saint Mary's.
